Storage Tips
October 2003
Following are some tips and guidelines for storing household items in the Storage unit:
Before storing
Storing
After storing
Retrieving

Before storing
Use 1 or 2 uniform-sized boxes for packing to save storage space by stacking.
Get packing tape, masking tape, sturdy rope, labels and other needed packing supplies for packing.
Small box of tools like screwdriver and hammer will be handy for dismantling and re-assembly of furniture.
Make an inventory of your items to be stored and keep it in a safe place, such as at home or at work.
Pack all items properly in the boxes using tape and label them accordingly.
Make sure that all the boxes are fully packed to save space. Instead of storing all the heavier items (like books) in the big box, split them into smaller boxes for easier moving.
Dismantle tables and as many items as possible to save storage space.
Drain all the remaining gas from lawn movers, trimmers and other power tools.
Trolleys (or other machinery) will be very useful for storing heavy items like appliances. Check out if the storage facility provides them for your use. If not, they need to be rented for ease of moving.

Storing
If the floor in the storage unit and facility is not clean and/or damage prone, then cover the floor with protective sheeting or boards.
Plan to keep an internal walkway inside storage space for easy access to all the stored items.
Store the items that you need to get more often in the front. And store the largest items first in the back of the Storage Unit.
Stack boxes and similarly sized items together to save space. If needed, stack heavier boxes in the bottom and lighter boxes and boxes marked "Fragile" on top of them.
Store sofas and love seats to the end of the storage unit for saving floor space. Place a protective cover under the sofa on the floor. Wrap cushions in plastic and place them on top of the sofa.
Keep the doors of all kitchen appliances slightly open to avoid building bad odours, mildew, and others. Fill all the appliances with small boxes and other items to maximize available storage space.
Stack pictures and mirrors to the end of the storage unit.
Store mattresses vertically standing on their end and slightly leaning against the wall of the storage unit. This will help matrresses stand straight and avoid bending out of shape with extended storage.
Cover all the stored items with a protective sheet to protect against dust.

After storing
Check out if you have extended insurance coverage for items stored away from home. If not, get the additional insurance coverage for the stored items.
Update the inventory sheets with the storage location of the item within the Storage Unit. It will be very useful for easy access later.
Keep the toolbox in the storage space along with the items, if possible.
Check on your storage unit at least once a month (or as often as possible).

Retrieving
Create a list of items to be retrieved from the storage unit.
Get the inventory list and find out the storage location of items within the storage Unit.
Get in the storage unit and retrieve all the needed items.
If needed, re-assemble the units using the tools from small tool box.
Make sure rest of the items left in the storage unit are organized and covered as mentioned above.
If all items are retrieved, then make sure to keep the storage unit as clean as possible.
